The Ultimate Snapshot….. the difference between a snapshot and a photograph.June 29th, 2011The Ultimate Snapshot….. the difference between a snapshot and a photograph. |
The Ultimate Snapshot…..
the difference between a snapshot and a photograph.
We live in the digital era and it seems like GWC (guy with a camera) and MWC (mom’s with a camera) are EVERYWHERE. Every one’s a photographer these days but are they really taking professional portraits or are they just snapshots, and what’s the difference?
Lets explore…
We see photos like these everywhere tagged with the “photographer’s” logo.
Just because you pushed the button doesn’t automatically make you a “photographer”. Just like me doing my taxes doesn’t automatically make me an accountant and neither does shooting with an DSLR or a professional looking camera set to auto. These are snapshots, just that. Sometimes you can end up with some really cool snapshots.. other times …images that just missed the mark. But what’s the difference… what makes a photo a professional photograph and not a snapshot?
Well, intent and knowledge. A photographer knows how to position the person and manipulate lighting in a photograph. They can do this with a point’ n shoot, DSLR and most can even use a pinhole camera! They understand how to USE shadows, not just create harsh ones. They know WHEN to click the button and not fire off a stream shots hoping to get the right moment. They have the ability to “see” the photo before it’s taken. These are skills possessed by true photographers. Having a vision of the final image is something even the MWC and GWC possess. But it’s the ability to EXECUTE it is what makes them an photographer. (I know how I want my house to look but I still need an architect to draw the plans)
GWC and MWC stop tagging photos like you are a photographer, do you have a DBA…where did you study?
So the next time you see a photograph tagged with a photography company.. look and examine if it’s a PHOTOGRAPH made by a real PHOTOGRAPHER or just a Snapshot.

Photography is NOT a COMMODITY.
The commodities are goods for which there is demand, but which is supplied without qualitative differentiation across a market. A commodity has full or partial fungibility; that is, the market treats it as equivalent or nearly so no matter who produces it.
When you hire a photographer do you not choose them based upon the photographer themselves? Is it not based upon the photographer’s ability to produce the images you envisioned? Then why are people trying to treat photography like it’s a commodity?
If it’s simply images you want then sure… it doesn’t matter who produces it. Hell you can have your aunt Betty or even a monkey push the shutter for you. Actually you don’t need anyone at all, just a tripod! But a simple image is not what most people are looking for when they set out to hire a photographer. They want memories captured, they want time frozen, and now even reality altered ….. and not everyone who can push a button can produce THOSE types of images.
Photographers know that cost is important to everyone, but if you’re just shopping around for the lowest, then you really aren’t trying to hire a “Photographer“. You want some one to push a button, and that’s what major chains like SEARS and WALMART are for. Photographers charge according to their skills, equipment, and time invested. (Which is the reason you went to them correct?) I’ve heard several photographers say they get “wow that’s not the price I was expecting”. Well we are shocked by quotes everyday. Recently my husband’s car got dinged and the rim scratched. He got a quote of almost $1100. My first thought was “for that little ding!” But reality is ….That’s what it cost. It simply wasn’t what I THOUGHT it would cost. Yea I could have my brother in-law’s sister’s husband fix it for $200 and some DVD’s but that’s not the QUALITY I’m looking for. I want some with the knowledge, equipment and experience to give me the results and can back it with a guarantee. Then I don’t have to deal with the problem of the paint chipping in two months where the dent was. We have to get out of buying slightly cheaper and receiving significantly less quality. That’s what happens when you book a MWC (mom with a camera) or a GWC (guy with a camera). Spend the little extra and get something you can really be proud to display in your home.
Remember that with photography it’s different… a mechanic you can take the car back, a purse you can return if defective, but you will never get that moment.. that second back in your life ever again. So if you only get one chance… hire someone you know will get it right.
Because Photography is NOT a commodity….. who produces it makes all the difference in the world.

I was supposed to post some of the newer photos I’ve been working on, but it started storming soo I turned off my pc. (I have a backup battery but 3 power supplies, 2 pcs, and restore later…I’ve learned my lesson). So since I’m up..I’ve decided 2 post what I’ve been doing using this really nice BB app.
Recently I was emailed by a future mama about having maternity pics done. Well she turns out 2 be a journalist, and has an AWESOME blog. (Check it out:Baby Making Machine)
The graphic designer in me LOVES the layout. Between the font, color choices, layout, and illustrations …..this blog is on point!
And then of course there’s the content…AWESOME!
Reminded me of a fellow twitter photographer who is also a journalist. (trudy’s site
As a photographer I’m always impressed with good writers.
what people don’t know is…some photographers have 2 be writers 2. We might shoot a photostory and submit it 2 the magazines…but our chances are increased of getting printed if we submit a story 2 go along with it.
Well… I’m not that person. Yup sorry folks….I can admit it. I guess I’m just not deep or that’s prob why I take pictures.
I take pictures that freeze time. Images you don’t forget, not just snapshots. My goal is 2 get you interested in the subject, even if u have no RELATION 2 that subject. Even on regular portraits…..I want images that make anyone want 2 inquire about that person or persons in the photo (guess that’s why I always get asked ‘who’s that?’ by everyone).
I don’t want 2 write an article…hell while reading this you prob can’t even remember what I said 3 sentences ago. (Bet u can name 3 images from one of my websites tho)
So anyways…I’m reading this blog thinking…I should do it! I. Should update my blog with the latest artist albumcover, last model shoot, or even that the tiny crocheted hat is in for the premie photoshoot I have coming up. Or even my portrait site is 80% done ( ep portraits) So I’m gonna stay on top of it and “tRY” 2 keep up w/my social media duties….just don’t get mad if I speak in txt like I did in this post…its prob coming from my BB and its like an automatic reflex. LOL
